Jewish funerals tend to be simple and brief. Traditionally, at the mortuary prior to the funeral service, the deceased is placed into a plain wood coffin which contains no metal, including nails and is completely degradable. The deceased is then transported to the site of the memorial. Sometimes there may be both a chapel and graveside service, or just a graveside service. Either is permitted. How is a Jewish funeral different?

The Jewish funeral consists of a burial, also known as an interment. Cremation is forbidden. Burial is considered to allow the body to decompose naturally, therefore embalming is forbidden. Burial is intended to take place in as short an interval of time after death as possible.
How many days after death is a Jewish funeral?

Traditionally a Jewish burial is supposed to take place within 24 hours of death. This is done in accordance with the Torah, sacred Jewish scripture, which says, "You shall bury him the same day.... His body should not remain all night." Today, outside of Orthodox communities, funerals rarely occur this quickly.

Jewish Death Rituals According to Jewish Law

The body of the deceased is washed thoroughly. The deceased is buried in a simple pine coffin. The deceased is buried wearing a simple white shroud (tachrichim). The body is guarded or watched from the moment of death until after burial.

Where is the torn garment worn?

Traditionally, the kriah [tearing] is made on the left side of the garment for parents (over the heart) and on the right side for other relatives. You may choose to have a tie, blouse or shirt, or suit lapel torn, or a black ribbon worn on a garment.
How long do I wear the kriah garment?

The tradition calls for the mourner to wear a torn garment during the shiva [first seven days of intensive mourning]. On Shabbat, Holy Days, and festivals, no public signs of mourning are worn.
Is it possible to bury personal items with the body?

According to Jewish law, each person receives equal burial and there is no need for physical items to be buried with the deceased. Some people request that a small memento be placed in the casket.
